A Chinese consortium will build Brazil's Salvador–Itaparica bridge, which is to become the longest cable-stayed bridge in Latin America. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2031.

According to Chinese and Brazilian media, a public-private partnership involving two Chinese engineering conglomerates will build a significant part of the structure. Once completed, it will become the region's largest trans-bay project with cable-stayed support.

The total length of the project is 46.8 km. Of that, 12.4 km run across the Bay of All Saints in the Atlantic Ocean, and the main span measures 682 metres.

A pile-driving vessel built by a subsidiary of the state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) left Jiangsu province in eastern China on Sunday. According to the Xinhua news agency, it is expected to reach the bridge construction site within 45 days. The pile-driving vessel is used to sink load-bearing supports deep into the seabed.

The project continues a series of infrastructure facilities that Chinese contractors are carrying out abroad.
