US President Donald Trump said on 7 October 2026 that he considers himself worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize but doubts he will actually receive the award. He said this to journalists in the Oval Office.

“I don't know what their decision will be,” Trump said about the 2026 prize, whose laureate the Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce on Friday, 9 October 2026. “They have a reputation: maybe they don't give it to people like me.”

Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the award, which is described as one of the most prestigious in the world.

“It's about time,” he told journalists. “But I was very pleased to receive it indirectly last time from a laureate who said no one in history deserves it more than President Trump.”

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado handed her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump in January, seeking US support for her efforts in Venezuela.

Trump said he should receive the prize after being involved in eight conflicts since taking office in January last year. According to him, he was nominated by the leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan, but this cannot be confirmed.

Parties to some of the conflicts Trump calls resolved dispute his diplomatic role, and fighting in a number of these regions has resumed — including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and on the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Trump failed to settle Russia's war against Ukraine, although he promised to end it on the first day of his second presidential term. US and Israeli strikes on Iran led to a seven-month smoldering conflict that undermined global energy supplies and raised gasoline prices ahead of the November midterm elections.

Among the favorites to receive the prize this year are named Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court and the special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories.
