Meta's chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said his active meme posts on X about the new AI assistant Muse were part of a broader goal — to make Meta 'cool' again. The 29-year-old top executive spoke about this in an interview with podcaster David Senra.

According to Wang, he often thought about new memes even during meetings and found it hard to concentrate. "I would just think of the meme and say to myself, 'Oh God, I have to post this'," he said, adding that colleagues were "a bit surprised" by the buzz around his posts.

"It genuinely drove growth. Which is quite funny."

According to him, the spontaneous posts served a broader purpose — restoring Meta's reputation as a "cool" company. "Despite the fact that we have such incredible cultural products as Instagram and Facebook, historically Meta was not cool," Wang said. "I remembered that the internet rewards risk."

Muse launched on September 8 and within 10 days rose to the top of Apple's App Store, overtaking ChatGPT. According to Meta, Muse helps users find information, fill out forms, buy goods online, book restaurant tables, find a dog sitter and connect to services including email, calendars, Spotify, Instagram and OpenTable.

The app became Meta's first successful breakthrough in AI — after its Llama and Spark models failed to find a niche already occupied by models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Muse had an advantage: it launched at a popular company with several billion potential users already registered on Instagram and Facebook.

Competing AI agents from OpenClaw and Instinct already existed in Silicon Valley circles. An internet tired of pompous statements from executives who may once have been cool but are now entering their fifth decade (Mark Zuckerberg is 42) welcomed the energy of a young top manager who gained power in the AI era.

"It was very fun. There were a few tweets I didn't think much about and just said, 'To hell with it, I'm posting'."
