American company Google and energy company Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year nuclear energy agreement with investments exceeding $4.3 billion. The Wall Street Journal reports this. The deal is aimed at supplying electricity to new data processing centers.

Under the agreement, Google guarantees the purchase of 890 megawatts of generating capacity and funds the modernization of Constellation's facilities. With these funds, the energy company will upgrade and increase the capacity of 11 existing nuclear reactors at its plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

"Google and Constellation Energy have agreed on a large-scale 20-year nuclear energy deal that will allow an increase in electricity generation at 11 existing reactors… Constellation stated that it plans to invest more than $4.3 billion in the modernization of these plants".

As the publication notes, the modernization will provide energy supplies comparable to the construction of a single large reactor.

The first phase of the project is planned for completion in 2028, with work on the remaining units continuing until 2032-2033.

In addition, the parties agreed on additional 15-year supplies of 2,700 megawatts of electricity to the unified power grid in the eastern and midwestern United States.
