Bone Marrow Donor Search in Russia Takes Minutes
Russia’s FMBA said that finding a compatible bone marrow donor takes only minutes, with a match result immediately sent to the treating physician.

Finding a compatible bone marrow donor in Russia takes only a few minutes. If a match is found, the result is immediately sent to the treating physician, the Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia said on September 19.
After a doctor submits a request, the system compares the patient’s genotype with data from Russian donors in the Federal Registry. It currently contains information on more than 550 thousand Russian citizens.
If a compatible donor is not found in Russia, the FMBA’s Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion begins searching international databases. The collection of biomaterial, its delivery and full laboratory support are funded from the budget.
The FMBA also explained that the procedure for collecting cells from a donor does not differ from blood donation. During the procedure, the person sits in a chair while an apparatus takes blood from one arm, separates the necessary cells and returns the blood to the other arm.
“Before allowing a person to donate, doctors conduct a full examination: they check for all hidden infections and the general condition of the body.”
World Bone Marrow Donor Day is observed on September 19.
