Retail fuel prices in Poland have surpassed record levels. On the morning of Monday, September 28, 2026, at one of a popular chain's filling stations in central Warsaw, a litre of 95-octane petrol cost 8.19 zloty (about $2.13), diesel fuel cost 9.14 zloty (about $2.37), 98-octane petrol cost 8.99 zloty (about $2.33), and LPG cost 3.39 zloty (about $0.88).
According to a forecast by the specialised portal e-petrol, fuel prices in Poland will continue to rise this week.
Reason for the Price Increase
The fuel price increase is occurring after the expiry of a government mechanism to cap its cost that was in effect in August. The programme expired on August 31. In early September, Poland announced it lacked the funds to keep fuel prices down.
At the same time, wholesale prices at Polish refineries have risen. According to e-petrol data, the average wholesale price of 95-octane petrol on September 26 was more than 6,300 zloty per cubic metre (about $1,600), and diesel fuel was more than 7,400 zloty per cubic metre (more than $1,900).
Position of the Authorities
In mid-September, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the country's residents face fuel prices that no one could have imagined in their worst nightmares. He blamed the price increase on Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who in August refused to sign a law initiated by the government and passed by the Sejm on taxing the excess profits of fuel companies.
