The US has officially ended the military operation Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq, Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell said.
According to him, the operation was completed jointly with US partners in the international coalition in accordance with the US-Iraq statement of September 2024. The organized withdrawal of coalition forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base marked the end of the military mission in the country.
Parnell noted that the operation lasted 12 years and led to the defeat of the Islamic State (an organization recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation) as an organized military force in Iraq. The country is now transitioning from the international coalition’s military mission to security provided primarily by its own forces.
The Iraqi government will bear primary responsibility for countering the remaining threats, including Islamic State remnants and Iran-linked armed groups. Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga and other units of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, are expected to lead this work.
The US will continue to provide targeted training assistance to Iraqi forces and intelligence support. Washington also intends to continue cooperation with Baghdad in combating terrorism.
On September 28, it became known that US troops had been completely withdrawn from Iraq. An Iraqi government representative said that all US combat units and logistical support personnel had left Iraq.
