Gazprom to Reconstruct World’s Largest Gas Storage Facility
Gazprom plans to reconstruct the world’s largest underground gas storage facility — the North Stavropol UGS facility. The work will affect the ring gas-gathering manifold, according to materials prepared for public discussion of the project.

Gazprom intends to reconstruct the world’s largest underground gas storage facility (UGS) — the North Stavropol facility. This is stated in materials prepared for public discussion of the project. The result is expected to be improved gas purification quality and greater operational flexibility.
As part of the project, the company plans to reconstruct the UGS ring gas-gathering manifold. The upgrade will allow the manifold to be cleared of liquid and mechanical impurities, as well as automate control of shut-off valves, which will improve operational responsiveness during switching.
What the reconstruction will provide
In addition, the storage facility will have improved flexibility in regulating operating modes and gas purification quality. Overall, this will increase the safety of operating the gas-gathering manifold and the facilities of the Rozhdestvenskaya gas compressor station, which is used by Gazprom.
Before work begins, an environmental impact assessment of the UGS reconstruction will be carried out. The final reconstruction materials will be posted electronically for 30 days after approval by the customer.
The world’s largest storage facility
The North Stavropol UGS facility is the world’s largest underground gas storage facility, created on the basis of a depleted gas field in Stavropol Krai. Its active gas volume reaches 90 billion cubic metres. Maximum daily withdrawal is up to 190 million cubic metres of gas.
The Gazprom Group produced 216.55 billion cubic metres of natural and associated gas in the first half of 2026, 3.38% more year on year. The increase in production was linked to higher domestic consumption due to colder weather conditions during the autumn-winter period. The company also said that the development of gas production capacity in eastern Russia is continuing, with new wells being brought online.
