On October 1, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone call with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. Iran's Foreign Ministry reported the conversation. According to the ministry, Araghchi outlined Iran's position on the issues discussed.
Motegi, in turn, presented Japan's position on regional and international developments and issues of mutual interest. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international matters.
Context
The call took place amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Tensions rose again on July 8, when US forces carried out several waves of strikes on Iranian territory, reportedly in response to an attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. These were the first strikes of this kind since a memorandum was signed between Washington and Tehran.
On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced the termination of the ceasefire with Iran. In response, Tehran began striking US facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Oman. The conflict led to a halt in maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz.
In recent days, Iran and the United States have exchanged indirect messages through intermediary countries on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The US side has reportedly presented Iran with a new draft proposal aimed at resuming negotiations.
