US President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have reached an energy ceasefire agreement. According to him, the deal takes effect immediately.

"From this moment, an energy ceasefire is in effect in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it! Thank you for your attention to this matter," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The statement came amid tensions over the further regulation of the conflict and disagreements over Ukraine's political future.

Call for a cessation of fire and the question of elections

Earlier, Trump called for a change of leadership in Ukraine, casting doubt on Vladimir Zelenskyy's continued tenure as president. In response, Zelenskyy said that Ukrainians themselves should choose their leader, and that elections could be held if the fire ceases.

In a conversation with the American television network ABC News, Zelenskyy appealed to the US to secure Russian President Vladimir Putin's agreement to a long-term cessation of fire.

"If you really want to hold elections in Ukraine, please tell Putin: give us two months, 60 days of a full cessation of fire, and we will organize elections," the Ukrainian president said.

Zelenskyy stressed that the decision on the country's leadership should remain with Ukrainian citizens.
