Ship breakdown halts Bosphorus traffic in both directions

Ship traffic in the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul has been temporarily halted in both directions because of a vessel breakdown. The incident occurred at around 19:10 on October 11, 2026.
According to available information, the 107-metre Maltese-flagged vessel IVYAN, en route from Bulgaria to Italy, began drifting near the Kanyldzhy area after an engine failure.
After reports of the incident, the coastguard vessels KEGM-4, TAHLISIYE-2 and TAHLISIYE-9, as well as the tugboats KURTARMA-7 and KURTARMA-11 belonging to the Main Directorate of Coastal Safety, were dispatched to the scene.
Ship traffic in the Bosphorus Strait has been temporarily suspended, and rescue operations are continuing.
Ministry statement
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure issued a statement on the incident.
“For the chemical tanker IVYAN, which was en route from Bulgaria to Italy and anchored near the Kanyldzhy area in the Bosphorus Strait because of an engine failure, the coastguard vessels KEGM-4, TAHLISIYE-2 and TAHLISIYE-9, as well as the tugboats KURTARMA-7 and KURTARMA-11 of our Main Directorate of Coastal Safety under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Ship traffic in the Bosphorus Strait has been temporarily suspended in both directions.”
