In the Turkish city of Antalya, a tornado struck a construction site in the Kepez district overnight. It destroyed two containers where workers lived, and 4 people were killed. According to authorities, one worker was injured, and his condition is assessed as light.
The tornado formed at a construction site in the Fevzi Çakmak microdistrict of Kepez. Turkey's meteorological service issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in the city that day. According to reports, 5 workers were in the containers when the wind overturned them. Another worker, according to information, was also in the containers; in total, according to reports, there were 6 people in them.
According to authorities, 2 workers were killed at the scene, and another 2 died in hospital, where they had been taken. Emergency services, police and firefighters were called to the site.
Observation terrace also damaged
The tornado also damaged an observation terrace belonging to the Kepez municipality. Video filmed by an employee who was working on the terrace, shot on a mobile phone, shows the wind carrying tables, chairs, a tent and a waste container. According to the description, staff were panicked. Footage from the scene shows destruction, including an overturned observation terrace.
Governor on the incident
Governor Antalya Hulusi Şahin, who visited the site of the incident, told journalists that hail had fallen on the same construction site before the tornado. However, according to him, there were no dead or injured in that case.
«Unfortunately, 2 of our workers were killed at the scene, and another 2 died in hospital. One worker is injured, his condition is light. We encountered a very unusual natural phenomenon. In other parts of the city, nothing was reported about a storm or a tornado. Nothing happened near the construction sites, but it was in this area that the tornado destroyed two containers.»
Şahin expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He stressed that the deaths and injuries at the construction site are not linked to the collapse of the crane. According to him, checks at the site are continuing, and crews are continuing to search for any other injured or dead.
