Turkey has called on Russia and Ukraine to stop attacks on merchant vessels in the Black Sea. Defence Minister Yaşar Güler made the statement on 28 October in Sofia, after a meeting of defence ministers and military chiefs of the countries of the Black Sea region.

According to the minister, Turkey is closely monitoring the intensive attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea. Ankara calls on the parties to act responsibly and to observe the principle of safety of navigation on the open sea.

Güler said that Turkey considers the safety of navigation important and expects responsible conduct from the parties on this issue.

Turkey also said it reserves the right to take legal measures in the event of strikes on ships flying the Turkish flag or on vessels belonging to Turkish companies.

Güler added that Ankara expects a response from Russia and Ukraine to Turkey's proposal to end the attacks.
