The development of stroke at a young age is preceded by prolonged exposure to risk factors — smoking, chronic sleep deprivation and alcohol abuse, anesthesiologist-resuscitator and oncologist-chemotherapist Sergey Astafurov said.

Smoking, the doctor said, is one of the most significant factors. According to him, nicotine contributes to vasoconstriction and increased arterial pressure, while other components of tobacco smoke damage the vascular wall and increase the risk of blood clots.

One of the most significant factors is smoking. Nicotine contributes to vasoconstriction and increased arterial pressure, while other components of tobacco smoke damage the vascular wall and increase the risk of blood clots. Chronic sleep deprivation and regular alcohol abuse also have a negative effect.

Lack of sleep, according to Astafurov, is associated with an increased risk of hypertension and metabolic disorders, while excessive alcohol consumption can provoke increased pressure and heart rhythm disturbances.

Sedentary lifestyle and pressure

Another common problem, the doctor noted, is a sedentary lifestyle. Lack of physical activity contributes to the development of obesity, arterial hypertension and carbohydrate metabolism disorders, which in turn increase the risk of stroke at an early age.

Astafurov separately pointed to the habit of ignoring high arterial pressure. Many young people do not measure their pressure, considering hypertension an exclusively age-related disease, whereas it is precisely high pressure that remains one of the main modifiable risk factors for stroke.

At the same time, the doctor stressed that lifestyle is not the only cause.

It is important to understand that stroke is not always a consequence of lifestyle. In young patients, its causes can also be heart disease, blood clotting disorders, vascular pathologies and other conditions.
