American entrepreneur and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with the rapid development of artificial intelligence. On the social network X, he recalled that he had warned about the potential threat of this technology 12 years ago.
The 2014 warning
Musk reposted his entry from August 2, 2014. In that message, the businessman urged "extreme caution" regarding AI and noted that this technology could potentially be more dangerous than nuclear weapons.
The catalyst for the renewed discussion of risks was an article by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. He proposed slowing down the pace of development of advanced artificial intelligence models to assess potential consequences.
Call to slow down development
According to Amodei, a coordinated pause or slowdown in the process would give developers an additional one to two years before the models reach a critically high level. This would help avoid potential miscalculations and serious errors.
Both Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with the Anthropic head's position on the need for a restrained approach to AI development.
