Yekaterinburg woman sentenced to 16 years in penal colony for murdering her son
The Sverdlovsk Regional Court has sentenced 41-year-old Nataliya Guseva to 16 years in a general-regime penal colony for the murder of her three-year-old son following a retrial.

The Sverdlovsk Regional Court has sentenced 41-year-old Yekaterinburg resident Nataliya Guseva, accused of murdering her three-year-old son. Based on a new jury verdict, the defendant was found guilty and sentenced to 16 years in prison, to be served in a general-regime penal colony.
Overturned acquittal and retrial
Earlier, in February, the Sverdlovsk Regional Court acquitted Guseva of murder, intentional infliction of harm to health, and improper fulfillment of parenting duties, based on a jury decision. The regional prosecutor's office appealed this verdict.
On June 16, the Second Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in St. Petersburg overturned the acquittal and sent the criminal case for a retrial with a different panel of judges. During the second trial, the jury found Guseva guilty and undeserving of leniency.
Details of the criminal case
According to the regional directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia, in April 2025, the woman beat her three-year-old son in their apartment and failed to provide him with medical assistance for 24 hours. On the day the boy returned from a children's hospital, she subjected him to violence again. The child died from his injuries.
A psychiatric evaluation found Guseva to be legally sane. As Valery Gorelykh, head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs directorate for the Sverdlovsk Region, specified, despite the defendant not admitting guilt, law enforcement officers managed to fully reconstruct the sequence of events.
