Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a message marking UN Day that the Security Council should become more just, open and inclusive. Turkish media published the message.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that the UN Security Council must become more just and inclusive. He made the statement in a message marking UN Day, which Turkish media published on October 24: CNN Türk, Hürriyet, Sabah and TRT Haber.
In the message, Erdoğan congratulated the UN on its anniversary “on behalf of my country and my nation.” He also thanked UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN staff working in Türkiye and in other regions of the world.
According to the president, the UN was established after the Second World War with the aim of protecting future generations from the scourge of war. He noted that current global challenges, including wars, humanitarian disasters, climate change, hunger and poverty, show that the organisation’s mission has not lost its relevance but has become even more important.
Erdoğan called on all countries to support the UN Charter and reforms aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the organisation’s main bodies.
Separately, he wrote that it is especially important for the Security Council to become more just, inclusive and capable of responding to the expectations of the international community. In his words, crises and conflicts in various regions of the world show how relevant this need is.
The president also mentioned the war in Gaza, which he described as a genocide and which, in his words, has claimed the lives of more than 74,000 civilians. He said Türkiye supports Guterres’s “UN80” initiative and is working with the organisation to make Istanbul a centre of the UN.
