Former Speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives Martin Romualdez has been taken into custody on charges of corruption and money laundering. The arrest warrant was issued by the country's anti-corruption court, Sandiganbayan, which ruled that the accused is not eligible for bail.
According to case files, between 2022 and 2025, Romualdez allegedly used funds obtained from contractors and parties interested in the implementation of government infrastructure and flood control projects. Investigators claim that this money was used to purchase real estate and stocks in order to conceal its illicit origin.
The arrest was carried out on the same day the court confirmed there were sufficient grounds to initiate the case. At the time of his detention, Romualdez was at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla reported that at the time of the arrest, the former speaker was undergoing treatment for a "cardiovascular event," unstable blood pressure, and an anxiety attack.
