GPS Off for Apps Can Extend Smartphone Battery Life
A journalist recorded 500 app requests to GPS over a day on his Android smartphone. According to him, restricting location access noticeably increases the device's battery life.

Turning off app access to location services can increase a smartphone's battery life on a single charge. The conclusion was prompted by monitoring an Android device: over a day it recorded 500 app requests to GPS.
System and third-party apps can check a smartphone's location hundreds of times a day and thereby drain the battery. The issue was noticed by a journalist who observed his phone logging GPS requests over the course of a day.
At first, the "While using the app" option was chosen for app access to location. However, it later emerged that apps circumvent this restriction: they can remain in the background and access location for hours.
"After two full days of restricting access to location in the background, I noticed a significant improvement in battery life."
According to the specialist, turning off GPS access for apps is a reliable way to increase a smartphone's battery life. He recommended granting location access only to apps for which it is essential — navigation, maps, the weather service and others.
Earlier it was also noted that some smartphone features can negatively affect device battery life. Among them were named Always On Display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning and other options.
