In the Kaunas district of Lithuania on September 15, 2026, a fighter jet from the NATO air policing mission intercepted and destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle that illegally entered the country's airspace.
Restrictions and alert triggered
The object's incursion into Lithuanian airspace was recorded by the country's Fire and Rescue Department shortly after midnight. Following the incident, authorities declared a yellow-level air alert in the Vilnius, Trakai, Elektrenai, and Kaunas districts, and imposed temporary operational restrictions at Vilnius International Airport.
Interception and normalisation of the situation
NATO fighter jets scrambled to intercept and eliminated the drone half an hour after it was detected. According to Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre, radar systems tracked the drone's movement from the direction of Trakai.
Following the destruction of the aircraft, all hazard warnings and temporary restrictions on civil aviation flights were fully lifted.
