Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to the United States to attend the UN General Assembly, but his plane, according to reports, will not land in New York. The aircraft is expected to arrive in neighboring New Jersey.
Israeli media reported a change in the route. As part of preparations for the visit, a group including staff from the Israeli prime minister's office and his personal security detail had already arrived in the United States to coordinate the details of the trip.
According to sources in the United States, security personnel and the US Secret Service discussed with Newark Airport's administration security arrangements for Netanyahu's plane and where it would be parked during the visit.
The issue of Netanyahu's possible detention arose against the backdrop of the International Criminal Court's decision to arrest him. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani had previously said that he did not want to see the Israeli prime minister in the city.
Mamdani said he would act within the powers granted by New York City law, but would not create his own laws for this purpose.
The New York mayor later said he did not have the authority to independently enforce the International Criminal Court's decision, but that, according to him, such actions could be carried out by US federal authorities.
Security measures are also being taken in New York ahead of Netanyahu's visit. The city's police said they were preparing for possible large-scale protests outside the United Nations headquarters.
