The Norwegian Nobel Institute has registered a total of 287 candidates for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Of these, 208 are individuals and 79 are organisations. This became known on October 9, 2026.

As US President Donald Trump's war with Iran continues into its eighth month, public opinion polls show he is unlikely to become the leading contender for the award this year.

Main contenders

Sudan's emergency response centres were named among the main contenders for the Nobel Peace Prize. In April 2023, amid civil war, Sudan's humanitarian crisis worsened. A charitable organisation operating with funding from the local community provides medical care, food support, education and protection for the civilian population. According to Polymarket, the probability of receiving the prize is 17 percent.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took office in April last year amid an escalating trade conflict with the United States and threats from Washington to annex Canada. The politician managed to establish new trade and diplomatic relations with China and Europe, thereby reducing dependence on the United States. However, his chances of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize are estimated at 1 percent.

Pope Leo XIV has the same probability of receiving the prize; since his accession to the throne of the Catholic Church in April 2025, he has been making active efforts to establish global cooperation. His repeated calls for peace, including attention to the situation in Gaza, had an impact and even drew criticism from the head of the White House.

Other nominees

Mykola Kuleba became one of the founders of the Save Ukraine organisation in 2014, at the start of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The organisation's work became even more significant in 2022. Missing Ukrainian children became a central issue of the organisation's humanitarian efforts during the conflict. Kuleba's current probability of receiving the prize is 9 percent.

Yulia Navalnaya (designated in Russia as a foreign agent and placed on the list of terrorists and extremists) is also among the contenders for the peace prize. Her chances of receiving the award are estimated at 5 percent.

Trump previously stated that he intends to settle another armed conflict in the near future — the ninth by count. The statement came in the context of the American leader's remarks about his merits in connection with the Nobel Peace Prize.
