Peter Hegemann was born in 1954 in Germany. A biophysicist, he made a significant contribution to the discovery of light-sensitive ion channels, in particular the channelrhodopsin.
Georg Nagel was born in 1953 in Germany. A biophysicist by profession; together with Hegemann, he made an important contribution to the study of light-controlled channelrhodopsins.
What comes next in Nobel Week
Nobel Week began with the announcement of the laureate in physiology or medicine. The name of the laureate in physics will be announced the following day, in chemistry on 7 October, in literature on 8 October, and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate on 9 October.
The name of the laureate of the Nobel Prize in economics will be announced on 12 October.
