Restoration of the former ‘Kresty’ prison complex has begun in Saint Petersburg
Restoration work has commenced on the historic 'Kresty' complex buildings. Once completed, the site is planned to house a museum, hotels, and office spaces.

Restoration work has begun in Saint Petersburg on the territory of the former 'Kresty' prison complex, located on Arsenalnaya Embankment. Due to the start of the project, the site has been officially closed to visitors since the beginning of September.
The first phase of restoration includes the repair of the entrance building, the wardens' houses, and the former bathhouse and laundry facilities. In the future, the complex is planned to host museum spaces, hotels, restaurants, offices, and creative areas.
Governor of Saint Petersburg Alexander Beglov emphasized that the work will ensure the complete preservation of the buildings' historical appearance. According to the city head, the project aims to preserve the complex's identity while filling it with modern functions. Beglov expects that the renovated 'Kresty' will become a significant center for business and cultural life, as well as one of the city's symbols, contributing to an increase in tourist flow.
As a reminder, the complex was sold to a new owner in March 2025 during an auction for 1.1 billion rubles.
