Bloomberg: US May Not Exempt Hungary from Tariffs on Russian Oil
Hungary is seeking US sanctions relief for continued Russian oil purchases, but Bloomberg doubts Washington will make concessions.

Hungary is lobbying the United States to lift sanctions for its continued purchases of Russian oil. Bloomberg reported this, noting that the question of Washington's willingness to make concessions to NATO allies remains open.
I asked them to support exemption from American sanctions aimed at purchases of Russian energy carriers during this transition period.
This was stated by Marton Gyöngyösi, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Hungarian parliament.
Bloomberg notes that Hungary remains dependent on Russian oil supplies. Last year, US President Donald Trump supported former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán before the April elections in Hungary, including by promising sanctions relief on Russian energy purchases. However, Hungary's current Prime Minister Peter Magyar stated after coming to power his intention to break with Orbán's pro-Russian policy.
Nevertheless, according to the agency, it is still difficult to say whether the US will make exceptions for Hungary.
The Law and Risks for Budapest
On September 19, Trump signed a law allowing large-scale sanctions against Russia. The document also provides for the possibility of introducing tariffs of up to 100% for countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
On September 17, Hungary asked the US not to impose additional tariffs on it for purchasing Russian oil and gas. Marton Gyöngyösi noted that the document's adoption creates risks for Hungary, and emphasized that the country intends to reduce its dependence on Russian energy carriers.
