Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on the European Union to engage in constructive dialogue and prevent the escalation of trade disputes. The statement was made on September 14, 2026, during a telephone conversation with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, held at the initiative of the French side.
The talks took place against the backdrop of Brussels tightening investment screening measures, public procurement rules, and anti-subsidy investigations affecting, in particular, imports of Chinese electric vehicles. The European Union has explained these actions as a necessary measure to protect against unfair competition.
According to an official statement by the Chinese foreign ministry, Wang Yi emphasized the need to maintain partnership relations, sustain mutual openness, and resolve trade differences through consultations.
Protectionism will not enhance Europe's competitiveness, but will only deprive consumers of high-quality and affordable products, fuel inflation, and hinder the green transition.
Beijing called on European partners to adhere to mutually beneficial cooperation and avoid intensifying confrontation in the global market.
