Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry demands investigation into incident at embassy in Moscow
The Azerbaijani side has called on Russian authorities to conduct an investigation after members of the 'National Bolshevik Movement' placed banners on the walls of the embassy in Moscow demanding the release of detained Russian citizens.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has issued an official statement demanding that Russian authorities investigate the actions of three members of the 'National Bolshevik Movement.' On August 27, 2026, the activists placed banners on the walls of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Moscow criticizing Baku.
The posters contained accusations against the State Security Service of Azerbaijan regarding the use of torture, as well as calls for the release of Russian citizens currently in custody in the republic. The movement's members claimed that Azerbaijan is pursuing an 'anti-Russian policy.'
In Baku, the incident was labeled an 'unacceptable provocation' and an 'ugly and biased campaign.' The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry emphasized that such actions may be aimed at artificially straining relations between the two countries.
Tensions in bilateral relations have persisted since December 2024, following the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane in Grozny, which resulted in the deaths of 38 people. Subsequently, Russia began arresting Azerbaijani citizens on charges related to crimes from the early 2000s, which Baku viewed as an act of ethnic discrimination.
In response, eight Russian citizens were arrested in Azerbaijan in June 2025. Furthermore, on August 19, 2026, the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan issued arrest warrants for three Russian experts, accusing them of calling for the overthrow of the government.
