Aleksandar Vučić has transferred presidential powers to the acting head of state, Ana Brnabić, who previously headed the National Assembly. At the ceremony, Brnabić said she will perform the duties of president until a new head of state is elected.
The day before, Vučić formally submitted his resignation. Serbian authorities confirmed that after his departure, presidential duties will pass to Brnabić.
On 27 September, Vučić announced his resignation from the post of President of Serbia ahead of snap parliamentary elections on 25 October. He intends to take part in them as a candidate of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party for the post of prime minister. Snap presidential elections must be held in the country by the end of December.
Snap elections amid protests
On 9 September, Vučić dissolved the National Assembly and scheduled parliamentary elections for 25 October. The vote had initially been planned for mid-2027, but the decision on snap elections was taken amid mass protests that have continued in Serbia since November 2024. The ruling party then proposed that Vučić head its list in the elections.
On 26 September, Vučić informed Russian President Vladimir Putin of his intention to resign. During the telephone conversation, the sides also discussed preparations for the parliamentary elections in Serbia and the situation around Republika Srpska.
