The European Union will not lift sanctions on Russia and will continue to support Ukraine. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa ahead of the EU leaders' summit, which is also being attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"One thing is absolutely clear: we will not lift a single sanction until Russia ends this war," von der Leyen told journalists.

Costa, for his part, stressed that the European Union needs to strengthen its support for Ukraine.

"Now is not the time to abandon support for Ukraine. Now is not the time to soften sanctions against Russia. The time has come to step up our support and increase pressure."

Both statements were made before the start of the EU leaders' summit.
