AZAL unveils strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, with 90% of the reductions to be achieved through the carrier's internal measures.

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) is developing a comprehensive strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As reported by Magomed Aliyev, AZAL's ESG data management business partner, during a panel discussion at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), 90% of the planned emission reductions will be achieved through internal measures within the aviation sector.
The foundation of the strategy is fleet modernization: purchasing new aircraft allows for a 15–20% reduction in emissions. Furthermore, the company is implementing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Since last year, AZAL has been using 2% SAF on flights to Europe, and it plans to increase this figure to 30% by 2050.
Additional contributions to decarbonization will come from optimizing fleet management and the route network, which the company estimates will provide an 8% reduction in emissions.
Magomed Aliyev emphasized that the carbon market is viewed by the airline only as one of the tools in its overall strategy, rather than the sole method for achieving environmental goals.
