A car registered to one of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's drivers came under fire in Ashkelon. The incident is being treated as a suspected assassination attempt, N12 reported.

According to police cited by N12, the gunmen intended to kill Mor Domrani — the son of Shalom Domrani, a well-known figure in Israeli organized crime. Nine suspects were initially detained in the case.

What is known about the car and the driver

The car that was targeted is registered to Boaz Assayag, a driver who works in the Israeli prime minister's office and previously testified in the corruption case against Netanyahu.

N12 stressed that at the time of the shooting the vehicle was not part of Netanyahu's official motorcade.

The investigation established that Assayag's son was behind the wheel, while Mor Domrani and other passengers were in the car. According to the police account, the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle intending to kill Domrani.

What investigators found

There were no injuries among those in the car, and its occupants left the scene after the shooting. The vehicle later arrived at the Erez crossing, where police intercepted it as part of the investigation.

During further questioning, a police representative said a flare gun was found in the possession of Assayag's son. According to N12, police also found a police identification cap and emergency flares in the car.

Assayag's son was among nine people initially detained as investigators worked to establish the circumstances of the shooting and the alleged criminal dispute. Some of those detained were later released to house arrest, while the car remains in police custody as part of the investigation.
