Chinese and Indian drugmakers compete for antimalarial market in Africa
A new study says Chinese companies are narrowing India's lead in antimalarial drug exports to 12 of Africa's most malaria-affected countries. In 2025, exports nearly matched India's.

China is challenging India's long-standing leadership in the African antimalarial drug market across 12 of the continent's countries most heavily affected by malaria, according to a new study.
According to data from the Indian research company Sol Gravitas, Chinese antimalarial drug exports reached $89.3 million last year. This is nearly equal to the volume of Indian exports, which totalled $89.6 million.
The gap has narrowed considerably. In 2021, India's exports amounted to $121 million, while China's exports stood at $62.6 million.
The study also examined purchases by the Global Fund for the same 12 countries and Kenya over the period from 2021 to 2025.
The growth in the share of Chinese companies in the antimalarial drug market shows that China's pharmaceutical sector is becoming increasingly competitive. Competition between Chinese and Indian manufacturers may affect the structure of medicine markets in Africa.
