Gastroenterologist Shota Kalandia of SM Clinic warned that folk remedies for heartburn using vinegar and baking soda can lead to dangerous health consequences. He said this on October 1, 2026.

According to the specialist, large doses of baking soda are especially dangerous.

"It is especially dangerous to take baking soda by the spoonful, dilute it 'by eye' or use it after a heavy meal. An excessive amount of sodium bicarbonate can disrupt the acid-base and electrolyte balance, cause nausea, weakness, muscle cramps and heart rhythm disturbances," Kalandia said.

He also noted that one should not try to treat heartburn with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice: acidic liquids can further irritate the esophageal mucosa, intensify burning and acid regurgitation.

Alcohol, herbs and milk

Another dangerous piece of advice, according to Kalandia, is treating heartburn with a small amount of alcohol. Alcohol can irritate the mucosa, affect the functioning of the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus and worsen reflux.

"Caution is also required with herbal tinctures. Natural origin does not mean the remedy is safe: plants can cause allergies and interact with medications. For example, mint in some people relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and increases the backflow of stomach contents," the doctor noted.

Milk, he said, also cannot be considered a remedy for heartburn. It may temporarily soothe discomfort, but full-fat milk can slow gastric emptying and in some people worsen symptoms later.
