Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus addressed deputies in the Moscow City Duma. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church stated that representatives of secular power are responsible for their decisions not only to voters, but also to God.
In his speech, the patriarch emphasized that a person's degree of responsibility at the Last Judgment depends directly on their social status and position in society. He noted that public servants must be aware of the reality of spiritual obligations.
“I do not want to frighten anyone, I simply want to say that this is reality. And these obligations before God should mobilize our sense of responsibility for everything we do—each in their own place, including people vested with secular power,” declared the head of the ROC.
In addition, the primate called on parliamentarians to exercise self-restraint for the sake of more effective work for the benefit of others. According to him, the calling of a deputy goes beyond performing merely economic or political functions.
The patriarch reminded them that citizens pin their hopes on elected representatives, so the main thoughts of officials should be directed at doing for people what they truly need.
“Do not think that I am calling on you to make sacrifices, although how many times has it happened that statesmen, honestly fulfilling their duty to the Motherland and to the people to the end, sacrificed their lives (…) You were given a position, someone pins their hopes on you, so most of your thoughts should be directed toward not disappointing those hopes, which means doing for people what they need,” he emphasized.
Earlier, Patriarch Kirill touched upon the topic of family values and abortion prevention, advising husbands to dissuade their wives from terminating pregnancies and to take on commitments to improve the family's financial situation in case of financial difficulties.
