Russia’s MFA summons Hungary’s charge d’affaires
Hungary's charge d'affaires Gabor Gergich was summoned to Russia's Foreign Ministry. Moscow lodged a protest and announced retaliatory measures against Hungarian diplomats.

Hungary's charge d'affaires in Russia, Gabor Gergich, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on 1 October 2026, the Russian diplomatic agency reported.
"The head of the diplomatic mission was given a firm protest over the groundless and openly unfriendly demand by the Hungarian authorities dated 8 September 2026 that a number of Russian diplomatic staff leave the country," the statement said.
The Hungarian diplomat was informed that, as a retaliatory measure, a group of staff at Hungary's embassy in Moscow and its consulates general in St Petersburg and Kazan must leave Russian territory within two weeks.
Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban said Budapest had decided to expel ten Russian diplomats. According to her, the expelled staff of the Russian embassy were allegedly engaged in activity in Hungary that "is unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention."
