Turkey has performed its first remote surgery: a surgeon in Istanbul removed a patient's uterus at a hospital in the province of Muş using a robotic system. The distance between the two cities is about 1400 kilometres.

The patient is a 43-year-old woman, Ayner Karadzha, who was being treated at the Muş State Hospital. According to reports, the operation to remove the uterus (hysterectomy) was carried out using telesurgery, that is, with a robotic surgical system at a distance. This is the first use of this method in Turkey.

How the operation was carried out

Gynaecologist Hatidjegul Tunjer of the Muş State Hospital said that the robotic-assisted operation was performed in Turkey for the first time. The surgery began after the preparatory work was completed.

Associate Professor Derman Basharan, a faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University, connected to the robotic system remotely. He worked from the Development and Training Research Centre of Istanbul (İDEA) of the Turkish Ministry of Health (TÜSEB).

At the Muş hospital, the operation was also performed by gynaecologist Hatidjegul Tunjer. According to the report, the hysterectomy with remote connection was completed successfully.

Patient safety

Muş Health Director Dr. Erol Emre Ömür said that patient safety was the primary consideration during the operation.
