Brazil's incumbent president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, won the second round of the presidential election with 51.79% of the vote, the country's Supreme Electoral Court reported. His opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, has not conceded defeat and has asked for the results to be annulled.

Bolsonaro received 48.21% of the vote. In the vote for Lula da Silva, 64.2 million voters cast ballots, compared with 59.8 million for Bolsonaro. The gap between the candidates was almost 4.5 million votes.

Flávio Bolsonaro is the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. He said he does not agree with the outcome and asked for the election results to be annulled because of a decision by Brazil's Supreme Court to extend voting by two hours. According to BBC News, the campaign headquarters of both candidates asked for voting to be extended, while Brazil's presidential election results have not been annulled to date.

How the election unfolded

The first round took place on 4 October 2026. None of the candidates received more than 50% of the vote. Bolsonaro finished ahead of Lula da Silva by two percentage points, receiving around 47% of the vote.

According to BBC News, this is the first time in Brazil's history that a candidate who lost the first round has won the runoff.

Fourth term and background

The new term will be Lula da Silva's fourth as president of Brazil. He was elected president in 2002, 2006 and 2022.

Former president Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence. In September 2025, the Supreme Court found him guilty of five crimes, including an attempted violent overthrow of the democratic order and an organised attempt to seize power after losing the 2022 election. Bolsonaro has not admitted guilt.

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Lula da Silva on his victory in the election.
