US resident Helen Sophis marked her 105th birthday and spoke about the secrets of her long life. The main one, she said, is a "pure lifestyle", which includes physical activity and a Mediterranean diet.
Sophis, who comes from a Greek family, often eats national Greek dishes. They include a lot of fibre and healthy fats: fish, vegetables, beans, cheese and whole grains.
She has always led an active lifestyle. At school, Sophis played basketball and volleyball, and at university she played tennis. During the war she worked at a factory, and later she took up golf.
According to the centenarian, good humour plays an important role in a long life. Sophis has never been married and has no children. She says she came to terms with this a long time ago, and notes that she has many good friends.
"Honestly, I feel wonderful. Even better than at 16," she said.
Earlier, former British resident Dorothy Crayton marked her 107th birthday. At the celebration, one of Crayton's secrets to a long life was her favourite breakfast: bacon, eggs and jelly sweets.
