Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to Kazakhstan on September 24, 2026, over the tragic deaths of servicemen during military exercises by Kazakhstan’s Naval Forces in the Caspian Sea. The statement was published on X by Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry.
The publication emphasizes that there is deep sorrow in Azerbaijan over what happened.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen servicemen, as well as to the brotherly people and government of Kazakhstan. May the Almighty rest the souls of the deceased and give their families strength and patience on this difficult day. We hope that those who went missing will be rescued safely and wish the injured serviceman a speedy recovery,” the statement said.
Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry also expressed condolences over the deaths during the exercises in Kazakhstan.
Details of the tragedy
According to Kazakhstan’s Defense Ministry, in the Mangystau Region, during exercises by the Naval Forces of Kazakhstan’s Armed Forces, a sharp deterioration in weather and strengthening winds swept servicemen into the sea. A total of 19 servicemen ended up in the water.
The deaths of 9 servicemen have been confirmed, 3 have been rescued, and one of those rescued has been hospitalized. The search for the others continues.
The search-and-rescue operation involves the Naval Forces, units of the Ministry for Emergency Situations, aviation and other services. To establish all the circumstances of the incident and coordinate the search operation, a commission from Kazakhstan’s Defense Ministry has been sent to the site, headed by the defense minister, Lieutenant General Dauren Kossanov.
