After 34 Years, Khojaly Witness Lyafkhanim Returns Home, Captured in Chingiz Mustafayev’s Footage

Lyafkhanim Mahmudova, remembered through footage filmed by National Hero of Azerbaijan and journalist Chingiz Mustafayev, who was killed during Khojaly, returned to her native land — Khojaly — 34 years later. This was reported by the public relations department of the Service for Restoration, Construction and Management in Khankendi, Aghdere and Khojaly.
In 1992, during Khojaly, Lyafkhanim was 9 years old. She is now 44 and is beginning a new life in her homeland. Together with her family, she has been provided with an apartment in the village of Tezebine, Khojaly.
After leaving Khojaly as a child in tears, she has now returned to her native land with a smile — together with her family, children and grandchild.
“Praise be to God. I feel great joy and pride. I express my deep gratitude to Mr. President, who enabled us to live through these days. May Allah rest the souls of our martyrs. We must certainly live on these lands where their blood was shed, so that their souls may be at peace.”
What is known about Lyafkhanim
Lyafkhanim Mahmudova witnessed Khojaly when she was just 9 years old. Together with her family, she ended up in Armenian captivity, endured severe torture and suffered the loss of loved ones.
Her real name is Lyafkhanim. The 9-year-old girl, whose feet were frostbitten from the cold, was given the name Nargiz by a doctor who treated her at the Agdam hospital.
