Europe's political centre is facing a crisis that goes well beyond the usual swings at the polls. As France 24 reports, public discontent is growing across Europe: promises to speed up economic growth have not been delivered.

In France, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to the New York Times' diplomatic correspondent in Europe, Steven Erlanger, economic stagnation, a gap between generations and declining trust in the established political leadership are growing. In his assessment, these processes are reshaping the democratic landscape of the continent.

Erlanger, who is based in Berlin, describes Europe as a continent for which the characteristics are "some kind of general rotation" and a "sense of drift".

"The promises of faster economic growth have not been kept," says Erlanger.

Oliver Farry conducted the interview. No further details are provided in the source.
