Instagram prepares new long-form video format to compete with YouTube

Instagram plans to expand its long-form video format, including videos longer than an hour. According to The Verge, the new format has been named Features. Meta intends to attract podcast creators and other long-form content producers and offer them new ways to earn money.
How long videos will work
The new format will allow users to publish long videos in landscape orientation. Videos can be uploaded from a computer and given cover images. They will be viewable not only on smartphones but also on televisions via the Instagram app for Apple TV in the United States.
Instagram plans to link long videos with short Reels. For example, a user will be able to watch a short clip and then move on to the full version. The platform also intends to add tools that allow creators to cut long videos into short clips on their own.
Long videos will appear in recommendations and in the Explore section. Instagram intends to take into account not only the number of views and watch time, but also how often users share videos with others.
How creators can earn money
Meta is considering several ways to monetise long videos. Among them are advertising before and during videos, bonuses for publication results, paid subscriptions, and help with placing brand advertising. Instagram also plans to conclude separate agreements with creators in order to attract more content makers.
According to The Verge, the development of long videos is linked to a general trend in the entertainment industry. Other large companies, including Netflix and Disney, also work with creator content and video podcasts. In this way, Instagram is competing with YouTube and aims to retain audiences, including on television.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri called the development of this direction a risky experiment. According to him, it is still unclear how successful the new format will be. The company has not yet specified the launch timing of Features for all users.
