Iran helped Yemen's Houthis direct drones and missiles at targets in Saudi Arabia and its allies in Yemen. According to sources familiar with intelligence on Saudi Arabia and the anti-Houthi coalition, Tehran also provided the group with training, intelligence and tactical recommendations. According to them, this support enabled the Houthis to carry out the most powerful and technically complex attacks.
Iran's assistance contributed to the Houthis' offensive, during which the group rapidly expanded the territory it controls in Yemen. The Houthis now control the coast on their side of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This is a strategically important maritime chokepoint with significance for Saudi oil exports.
The Houthis also struck Saudi oil tankers, energy facilities and airports. As a result of one of the attacks last week in Riyadh, at least 13 people were killed.
According to sources, Iranian assistance increased the Houthis' ability to strike targets in Saudi Arabia.
