Italy Extends Border Controls with Spain Over Ceuta Crisis
Italy's Ministry of the Interior has extended controls at sea and air borders with Spain for 15 days following a massive influx of illegal migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has decided to extend controls at sea and air borders with Spain for another 15 days. The step was announced by the Italian Ministry of the Interior following checks conducted by the national committee for immigration analysis and border security.
The ministry emphasized that maintaining the border regime is necessary due to the high risk of potential terrorists infiltrating Italian territory. Controls on the Spanish route were initially introduced on July 31 after reviewing current data on the situation in the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta.
The migration crisis in the enclave has led to disruptions in transport links. In particular, on August 1, the influx of people caused disruptions to ferry services between Ceuta and mainland Spain, creating significant congestion of vehicles and passengers at the port of Algeciras.
According to police data, more than 20,000 people may have illegally entered Ceuta from Morocco starting July 30. Thousands of migrants crossed the border by swimming or scaling the protective barriers erected along it.
