Microsoft Corporation Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith warned that restrictions on skilled immigration introduced by the Trump administration could damage the US technology industry and push foreign talent to move to other countries. He made the remarks in an interview published on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

"I think we all should be concerned that we — deliberately, inadvertently or otherwise — are sending signals that direct the most talented new wave of AI or software engineers to other countries rather than the United States," Smith said.

Smith's remarks came after US Vice President JD Vance announced that Microsoft and seven other companies would be barred from submitting green card applications for skilled foreign workers.

Smith rejected Vance's accusations of visa fraud, calling them "completely unfounded."
