US President Donald Trump said the United States will not attack Iran before the November midterm elections. According to him, this was preceded by "productive discussions" with the Islamic Republic, the details of which he did not provide.

"We will not attack Iran at any moment before the midterm elections, which will be held in the US on November 3."

Trump wrote about this on Thursday in a social media post.

As noted, the president's statement represents an unusual mixture of US national security and domestic political issues.

It came after a recent report by The Atlantic magazine that Trump had considered plans to strike Iran before the midterm elections and that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare strike options in advance.
