The collapse occurred on Thursday at an underground coal mine operated by the company İmbat Madencilik in the Soma district of Manisa province, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) north-east of the resort city of Izmir. According to Turkish media reports, seven workers were trapped under the rubble.
Rescuers first recovered the bodies of two miners, while two others were rescued and taken to hospital, as three workers remained underground. Their bodies were recovered overnight into Friday, bringing the death toll to five.
One of the two injured workers has already been discharged from hospital, while the second continues treatment.
Context
Soma was already the site of Turkey's deadliest mining disaster in 2014, when 301 miners died of carbon monoxide poisoning following an underground fire caused by an explosion.
