George Clooney Defends Mark Ruffalo Following Paramount Accusations
George Clooney called the accusations of antisemitism against Mark Ruffalo "absurd," supporting his colleague's right to free speech.

Actor and producer Mark Ruffalo has found himself at the center of a public dispute with Paramount after the studio accused him of using "antisemitic tropes." The conflict began with Ruffalo's criticism of the technology company Oracle, which he linked to Israeli military operations. Ruffalo characterized Israel's actions as "genocide," stating that they rely on a "system of apartheid supported by Oracle."
Ruffalo's criticism also touched upon the potential $111 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. The actor expressed concern regarding the political ties of David Ellison, head of Paramount's Skydance, to Donald Trump. In response, Paramount issued a statement expressing concern over the use of "antisemitic tropes under the guise of a commercial dispute," emphasizing that the company does not tolerate bias.
Mark Ruffalo called the accusations of antisemitism "horrifying and fundamentally untrue." On August 21, he stated that criticizing the actions of the Israeli Prime Minister or military technology contracts is not criticism of the Jewish people. According to him, his position is dictated by political convictions, not animosity toward Jews.
In an interview with Variety magazine, George Clooney supported Ruffalo, calling Paramount's position "absurd." "I believe in free speech, even when I completely disagree with it. It's important, it's part of how democracy works," Clooney stated. He also expressed skepticism regarding the financial viability of the Paramount and Warner Bros. merger, noting concerns about potential mass layoffs during the acquisition of large companies.
Previously, more than 170 artists, including Wallace Shawn, Hannah Einbinder, Joel Coen, and Naomi Klein, signed an open letter titled "Enough!," in which they condemned the use of antisemitism accusations to suppress criticism. Actress Ilana Glazer also issued a statement, calling such accusations a dangerous way to silence critics.
The deal between Paramount and Warner Bros. remains in limbo until June 2027, when a court will review all legal issues related to the merger.
