Macron rejects resignation of France’s interior minister amid protests
French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation request of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez amid mass unrest in the country.

French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the resignation request of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. The presidential administration, the Elysee Palace, announced this on Monday. The decision was made after mass unrest that swept the country over the weekend.
The protests were driven by public discontent over the rising cost of living, deteriorating public services and the condition of schools.
According to the Elysee Palace, Macron believes Nunez should remain in his post to preserve a unified chain of command in the police and security forces. The president also instructed the minister to develop new approaches to dealing with looters as quickly as possible.
Nationwide protests on Saturday turned into disorder. A town hall building was set on fire, shops were looted, and buildings were covered in graffiti. In a number of cities, groups that used violence clashed with police.
On Sunday, new clashes broke out in Paris and Marseille. Police, who were working to contain the disorder, intervened to prevent businesses from being ransacked.
