Psychiatrist Javier Quintero assesses the impact of pet dogs on human health
Psychiatrist Javier Quintero explains how owning a dog affects the physical and mental state of the owner, noting the importance of a comprehensive approach to treating mental health disorders.

Owning a dog has a positive effect on the physical and mental state of the owner. According to psychiatrist Javier Quintero, having a pet encourages a person to take regular walks, which helps combat the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle and has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system.
From a mental health perspective, interacting with an animal contributes to biochemical changes in the body. Specifically, tactile contact with a dog leads to a decrease in cortisol levels, known as the stress hormone. At the same time, the concentration of oxytocin in the blood increases—a hormone responsible for feelings of calm, emotional attachment, and general well-being.
However, the expert warned against overestimating the therapeutic effect of pets. Quintero emphasized that, despite the proven benefits for emotional well-being, dogs cannot serve as a full replacement for psychotherapy or medication prescribed by a specialist.
